A woman speeds through the forest, her head spinning, but she continues on, going as fast as her legs could take her. Cuts and bruises cover her dark skin, and thick chains still link her arms to together. The sound of thundering hooves were heard clearly in the distance.
Their coming! she thought as her heartbeat quickened. She stumbles upon a tree root and struggles to stand, but it is too late. They are already here. They laugh triumphantly as they tower above her on their trusty steeds. They force the beasts muzzle before her, striking fear into her African heart. But now they are done with their fun as the dismount from the hefty beasts. She looks up at them, her eyes filled with fear.
She hopes that there is some slim chance that they will show her mercy. But her hope for mercy leaves her as she feels a blunt object comes across her face, bringing tears to her eyes. Yet again, a blunt object strikes her, but this time on her head, before she could even fully feel the immense pain from the previous strike. And then all at once, the pain came and she went unconscious. Times passed and her unconscious thoughts floated around with no direction, until she finally awoke.
Her sight was a bit blurred at first, but soon enough, it became clear and she could now see the horrid place. She jumped forward in shock, but was pulled back by a thick chain around her neck which was connected to the wooden wall behind her.
Where am I?! she cried out in her African tongue. But there was no reply. The people surrounding her could only look at her, despair evident in their eyes. Time passed and soon enough, lumps of bread and strange meat were thrown down from above, but she could not reach it. Her stomach cried out for nourishment, but she could not fulfill its wish. She could only sit in the pain-staking silence and listen to the groans of her stomach, along with others.
Finally, the silence was broken by a small boys futile cry. The language was foreign to her, but nonetheless, she listened. Everyone listened. Time passed and it felt as though years had passed by. Soon enough though, the men from above, the white men, came down from above and removed the thick chains from around their necks, leaving their wrists to continue being bound. No one dared attack these men since no one knew the consequences they could be subject to. Everyone simply complied with their orders. They were all directed to head above in a single-file fashion.
Where are they taking us? she thought to herself. As they reached the above world, sunlight barraged their dark-adjusted eyes. But she was forced to open them as she felt something rough being slipped around her neck. It was placed around everyones neck by the white man. Everyone processed forward and she was forced to follow. She had not realized that each loop was connected. It immediately began to chafe, but she had to stand it. She looked about and she knew that she was no longer home; this strange place was far from it. She halted and looked up into the dim sky.
Remember, she whispered in her African tongue. Remember. Suddenly, something came down on her bare back, raking down in mercilessly, tearing off the thick skin. She screamed out in agony.
A young woman awoke, jerking forward abruptly so that she sat upright. A thin layer of sweat had broken over her body and her bed sheets were thrown about chaotically. Her chest felt heavy as though everything inside her had tripled in weight. She lifted her hand and clutched the place where her heart was on her chest. Remember, she whispered. She slowly turned her head to look out the window. The dawn was now evident, its rays falling upon the metropolitan landscape. Remember.
